The Hartwell House Inn of Ogunquit, Maine is widely known for attracting a clientele of romance-seeking couples, seasoned world-travelers and creative types working on writing, painting and photography projects.

This year, as autumn turned the bend – just past the peak of magnificent foliage color – celebrated artist John Ross Palmer brought some of the hues of his own creativity to town during an anniversary stay at Ogunquit’s romantic Hartwell House Inn.

During his Ogunquit visit, Palmer took advantage of the local scenery by painting at Perkins Cove, sketching on The Marginal Way, and even creating an original piece of artwork depicting the famous Hartwell House Inn B&B.

Palmer, who was married to his husband, attorney Ryan Lindsay, in an intimate 2013 ceremony on the Hartwell House B&B grounds, is an American artist based in Houston and founder of the Escapism art movement.

“As an abstract painter,” states Palmer, “I often insert a simple, realistic image in alongside my strong brushstrokes. This helps to slowly pull the viewer into the world of the abstract. Art, for me, is a healing process. Just as the healing process is not easy, neither is true appreciation of abstract art. A basic trigger, to help pull the viewer in, aids in this regard.”

In 2009, Palmer began the Escapist Mentorship Program, a no-fee program created as a way for artists to meet, and to learn about Escapism and the business of art from Palmer himself. The program was “designed to defeat the idea that artists must struggle by giving them business knowledge and focuses on self-promotion, business tools and setting high expectations for artists.”

In 2010, the Museum of Cultural Arts Houston named Palmer “Artist of the Year.” In the same year, he was a finalist for the Hunting Art Prize. In 2012 and 2013, abOut Magazine awarded Palmer the F.A.C.E. Award for the LGBT community’s most influential artist.
