On Saturday, August 10th, the 8th Annual “Woodies in the Cove” Car Show (to benefit the Historical Society of Wells & Ogunquit) was held – and the parade passed by Hartwell House Inn on their way down to their Perkins Cove destination.
This event has been listed as the top “things to do at Exit 19” in 95 North Magazine for the past two years running. It is well known in the world of Woodie car shows.
“The National Woodie Club exists to promote interest in woodies; to educate owners and the public on their history, beauty, usefulness and uniqueness; and to provide an association through which woodie owners and enthusiasts may exchange information on history, building, restoration or modification techniques and share experiences. The woodie is a special kind of car, which deserves special recognition. The National Woodie Club will work toward that goal.”
“Wood-bodied station wagons, affectionately known as Woodies, may be gone, but are certainly not forgotten. Woodie wagons were first popular in affluent American communities, and were often found at hotels, country clubs, and national parks. Featuring hand-crafted strips of birch and mahogany on both interior and exterior panels, wood-bodied wagons were priced higher than regular models. “
“In the 1920s, cars with wood paneling were mostly done by custom shops. Henry Ford bought 400,000 acres of forest land in Michigan in 1920 and shipped the wood out to be milled and assembled until they began milling themselves in 1934. General Motors used a separate company to make its woodies.”
“As Woodies became older and affordable, they passed into the hands of younger drivers, most notably surfers on the America’s West coast. Along with the language, clothes, and music, the Woodie Wagon became a part of 1960s California surf culture. “
