Bread and Roses Bakery in Ogunquit Maine Closes

Earlier today, Bread And Roses Bakery of 246 Main Street, Ogunquit, Maine made an announcement on their Facebook page informing their friends, community members, and the general public that they have decided to close their Ogunquit, Maine storefront and move their retail operations to 614 Post Road in Wells where they currently have a commercial bakery.

And so, with warm spring like weather on the way, and a feeling of change in the air, I am letting you all know that I am moving Bread And Roses Bakery to our location at 614 Post Road in Wells. We will be opening for takeout and easy curbside pickup in the spring, with a more serious renovation plan in the works.

The announcement on the Bread And Roses Bakery Facebook Page read:

Dear Friends, In 1989, I was 25 years old, loved to bake, knew nothing about business, and opened my tiny 425 square foot bakery with just $2500.00, and no real plan.

We were tucked in the alley behind the Harbor Candy Shop, where we baked tiny batches of muffins and bread. We sold one size of coffee- just regular or decaf. Yet, somehow people found us, and they kept coming back. We made birthday cakes, scones, and big cookies. We made changes, added items, tried new things.

In 2000, we had the chance to move on to Main St., and everything changed. Business exploded. We stocked our pastry cases with eclairs, cakes, fresh fruit tarts, cupcakes, Napoleons, whoopie pies and so much more.

We started selling wholesale to restaurants. And we learned to become baristas; adding espresso, cappuccinos, and virtually every version of a latte one can dream up.

In recent years, we have become very busy shipping some of our most popular items nationwide. The lines became the norm. Being open 16 hours a day in the season required a big staff. I have been blessed to be surrounded by so many great people. Whether they worked for just a season, or year after year, the hundreds of people (well, ok, almost all of them) who have worked here have given a piece of themselves to the success of Bread and Roses. We have had wonderful local kids, amazing dedicated people from all over the world who have shared their culture with us, and so much family. Carol, my sister and right hand, has worked here for 21 years. Sixteen of my nieces and nephews have also worked here. Relationships, marriages and families have begun in the kitchens and the porch of Bread and Roses.

We have been honored to play a small part in your birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, memorials and occasions of all sorts. Many of you have become dear friends, and whether we see you every morning or just once a year, we treasure the moments where we can smile and catch up.There have been so many changes through the years. Your continued support has not only sustained us, but you make our day when you walk through those doors for your Bread and Roses treat.

I have put my heart and sweat into this adventure for 31 years. Because you’ve had my back, it is something I am hugely proud of, and something bigger than I.

Many of you feel like Bread and Roses is your special place. And to me, that is a huge measure of the success of the business. It has been my great honor to own Bread and Roses Bakery. None of it would be possible with out you, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The pandemic in 2020 presented challenges that no one could have prepared for.

I could not be more proud of how my team handled the first phase of the pandemic. Everyone pitched in and kept each other safe. And you all showed us love like never before- waiting in line and tipping those kids so generously. Your cheerful words, and smiles behind the masks made difficult days seem more normal.

Ogunquit has been my home, and Bread and Roses has been my ever evolving creation for most of my adult life. All of the people- on both sides of the counter have made it a great place with a heart of its own.

And so, with warm spring like weather on the way, and a feeling of change in the air, I am letting you all know that I am moving Bread And Roses Bakery to our location at 614 Post Road in Wells. I have owned a commercial bakery there for a number of years. It is now time to utilize that space. We will be opening for takeout and easy curbside pickup in the spring, with a more serious renovation plan in the works. The team and I are very excited about the new changes. We will still be offering our delicious bakery treats and Carpe Diem Coffee drinks. We have parking, and curbside pick up will be a breeze. We have striven for thirty one years to provide you with a great experience: fresh bakery treats made from scratch, amazing coffee, and genuine appreciation for choosing us.

Please watch for updates as the spring approaches. We are planing to be open in April and will have some pop up shops before that. We truly hope you will visit us at our new space. We look forward to seeing you there when we open soon.Thank you all! We love you! Mary Breen
