For many of the summer people, Perkins Cove is just another piece of coastal Maine eye-candy. A place where parking is expensive, and there are always too few spots to meet the demand.
A place where the rustic, salty authenticity of real-deal historic lobster shacks bumps shoulders with the boutique shops that now inhabit many of them.
A place where you could put on a blindfold and be turned around until you were dizzy, then pushed in whatever direction you were facing, and you’d still be able to purchase a lobster roll and beer within 25 steps.
BUT – it’s important to remember, this home of Barnacle Billy’s, Oarweed Restaurant, The Lobster Shack, Jackie’s Too, MC Perkins Cove, the Todd Bonita Gallery and more is ALSO a working lobster and fishing boat harbor with rhythms that most of the quick-hit tourists never see the patterns of.
What were you saying about ‘bringing tuna into Perkins Cove?’
Perkins Cove is one of the big draws to Ogunquit. It’s hallowed ground for art history. The pedestrian footbridge over the lobster harbor is one of the most photographed spots in Maine. It’s the place where the Marginal Way scenic cliff walk actually begins. The many restaurants in Perkins Cove offer everything from rustic Maine seafood (especially lobster) to refined dining options – and most of them have incredible views, as well!
What a gift to happen upon the real work of the fishing trade during a visit to Perkins Cove – to see some of the bounty of the sea brought in through this modest, but storied, harbor…to see the legacy of this magical place continue…as when the tuna fishermen bring their catch in during the off hours….
Here’s a glimpse beyond the crowd of tourists…
