Ogunquit in the Winter – Snow Storm in Perkins Cove

Ogunquit in Winter - Perkins Cove

Many of those who frequent Ogunquit, Maine during the summer months have never had the pleasure of witnessing, firsthand, the veil of quietude that descends over our quaint, oceanside community as the winter snows begin to fall.

CLICK PLAY BELOW to see a video I took as the snow really began to fall one February day on a short walk from The Hartwell House Inn on Shore Road, down to Perkins Cove:

Just as the tides of the ocean cover and expose our beaches and rocky coastlines on a daily basis, so do the tides of tourists inundate and then recede from Ogunquit, annually.

When the weather grows cold, Ogunquit becomes a different world – completely altered, but no less beautiful for the turn in seasons.

The beauty of a wintery Ogunquit is beauty of another type. The beauty of quiet streets. The beauty of shuttered “summer” businesses. The warmth and promise of lights emanating from the “year round” businesses which form the core of the Ogunquit community.

Winter Ogunquit is the perfect romantic destination for a couple looking to mindfully visit a community of uncommon beauty and have it mostly to themselves. Time to slow down. Share moments. See the true local colors of a tightly knit and welcoming neighborhood.

And you haven’t truly experienced the Marginal Way until you’ve also seen our famed cliff walk blanketed in snow and lined in the icy white of off-season beaches. In case you’re wondering, people do walk it year round – and it’s well worth the effort – but be careful, the rocks can be slippery and winter oceans are often unforgiving.

If you’re lucky, perhaps you’ll visit Ogunquit on the eve of a major snowstorm – and be able to witness how experts of the winter weather artform deal with another Nor’Easter on the horizon. Local plows at the ready. Lobstermen and fishermen securing their gear in Perkins Cove. Discussion of the forecasts at the small shops and restaurants. The feeling of “we’re all in this together” that you’ll only find in a small and storied coastal village in Maine.
