Dr. Devon Zimmerman, OMAA’s Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, expressed his excitement, stating, “This exhibition promises to be a thought-provoking journey through Cudahy’s rich and complex artistic practice. It will offer visitors a unique perspective on the interplay between the personal and the historical in the artist’s work. An exhibition of a contemporary artist of Cudahy’s stature is a triumph for OMAA, underscoring our commitment to showcasing exemplary contemporary talent with our audiences.“
The inspiration behind Spinneret stems from the silk-producing organ that spiders use to weave their intricate webs, symbolizing the interwoven references that characterize Cudahy’s oeuvre. Drawing from Queer archives, art history, film, poetry, and personal experiences, Cudahy creates figurative paintings that piece together enigmatic scenes, blurring the lines between the real and the surreal.
Cudahy’s art delves into the complexities of subjectivity in the digital age, exploring themes of love, friendship, and the human experience. His compositions often anchor on moments of tenderness, repose, and isolation, capturing prosaic instances that carry profound poetic weight. The exhibition will also feature Cudahy’s reflections on death and its politics, drawing from historical crises such as the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
To complement the exhibition, a catalogue published by Monacelli Press will be available in Spring 2024, offering art enthusiasts an in-depth exploration of Cudahy’s work and its significance in the contemporary art scene.
Anthony Cudahy, a graduate of Pratt Institute and Hunter College in New York, has garnered international acclaim with recent solo exhibitions in London, France, and Amsterdam. His work is featured in prestigious collections, including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
The Ogunquit Museum of American Art, founded in 1953 by artist Henry Strater, continues to be a beacon of artistic expression. Nestled on the picturesque coast of Maine, the museum’s three acres of gardens provide the perfect backdrop for the exploration of American art from the late 1800s to the present. As the museum reopens for the 2024 season on April 12, art enthusiasts and curious minds alike are invited to experience the transformative power of Anthony Cudahy: Spinneret.
