About Ogunquit, Maine – View The Live Streaming Ogunquit Webcams
According to legend, Ogunquit means “beautiful place by the sea” in the Abenaki Indian language. Over the years, Ogunquit has evolved from a quiet fishing and lobstering village on the southern seacoast of Maine into a destination that is consistently rated among the top beach towns in the United States.
In 1928, the Ogunquit Art Association (Maine’s Original Artists’ Group), founded by Charles H. Woodbury, began organizing art education and exhibitions in this breathtakingly beautiful town. The arts activity in the village, along with the rugged coastal landscape and unique quality of light in Ogunquit attracted a wide variety of notable artists to visit; think Edward Hopper, Marsden Hartley, Bernard Karfiol, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Alfred Bellows, Harmon Neill, Peggy Bacon, William Ehrig, Walt Kuhn, and hundreds of others. As the cultural reputation of the summer art colony grew, word-of-mouth began to spread across the world about Ogunquit’s scenery and lifestyle. The tourists arrived shortly thereafter – and generations of unforgettable memories have been created on our sandy beaches, in Perkins Cove (our working lobster harbor), along the Marginal Way scenic cliff walk, and while walking the Shore Road to our Ogunquit’s bustling downtown.
Present day, our four-square mile town of Ogunquit is one of New England’s most cherished beach destinations – with over three miles of dreamscape sandy beaches! The best beaches in Maine!
Ogunquit’s art scene is vibrant. Approximately 100 juried member artists (some with national and international reputations) of the Ogunquit Art Association continue the tradition today at Barn Gallery where they host vibrant exhibitions, inspiring gallery talks, lively panel discussions, illuminating demonstrations, and enlightening workshops. World class musical theatre performances pack the Ogunquit Playhouse, one of the last remaining summer theatres from the Straw Hat Circuit. The artistic heritage and origins of Ogunquit’s art colonies (Charles H. Woodbury’s Ogunquit Summer School of Drawing and Painting + Hamilton Easter Field’s Summer School of Graphic Arts) bump up against rotating exhibitions of engaging modern and contemporary art at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (founded by Lost Generation artist, Henry Strater).
Ogunquit is a shopping and dining wonderland. Boutique shops and independently-owned restaurants are everywhere — from Perkins Cove, along Shore Road, to downtown Ogunquit and beyond! Did someone say LOBSTER?
