Savor The Taste of Coastal Maine At Home: Maine Sea Salt

When it comes to food, Maine may be best known for its blueberries and lobsters — but one of our favorite Vacationland ingredients is Maine Sea Salt.

Ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras once stated, “Salt is born of the purest parents: the sun and the sea.” But, these days, most of the so-called salt utilized in food production isn’t anywhere near as pure as it was back in 500 BC. The heavily-processed table salt of today goes through a myriad of chemical processes (which remove beneficial trace minerals), bleaching, and adulteration with anti-caking agents to prevent clumping.

Maine Sea Salt, on the other hand, is natural, unrefined, and hand-harvested. The sea water (which comes from Buck’s Harbor, Maine) is evaporated in shallow pools located in greenhouses with sunlight as the only source of heat. The salt is never heated, for example: in a kiln, nor is it washed. They do not add drying agents to the salt, it is kept in it’s simplest natural state.

Maine Sea Salt is located in Down East Maine in the town of Marshfield, next door to Machias. Their products are now sold throughout the United States, in health food stores, specialty food shops, and high end restaurants.

But you can upgrade your kitchen pantry right now by ordering Maine Sea Salt directly below (through Amazon) – and flavor your next meal with the essence of the foggy, salt-spray from our rugged coastlines!
