What a difference a day makes.
As I type this, the warm spring sun is making its first annual appearance over Ogunquit, Maine. You can feel the excitement from those driving past the Hartwell House Inn on Shore Road, heading down to Perkins Cove to watch the glistening waves come in along the Marginal Way and the light dancing on the water.
The majority of Cove businesses have finally opened for the 2015 season. Barnacle Billy’s, The Lobster Shack and Footbridge Lobster have come to life alongside MC Perkins Cove, and Jackie’s Too (among others).
Another sign of spring in Ogunquit…the parking lots all have their price signs up again.
Such a gift, to be able to watch the edges of seasons slowly blur together until the Ogunquit experience becomes something else, over, and over…always changing.
Today may be the turning point – but something special was in the atmosphere yesterday. Patchy fog, coating the tongue and lungs with the flavors of seaweed and ocean on each breath. Slightly warmer temperatures. An emotive ocean. The last piles of snow melting in rivulets, dripping down the rocky edges of the Maine coastline and returning to the sea.
Plus an uncommon calm.
The calm before the sun.
