If you’ve ever walked the Marginal Way, Ogunquit’s scenic coastal cliff-walk, than you certainly understand what a unique treasure it represents to everyone who visits our beautiful place by the sea!
As the publisher of Ogunquit Barometer, I am keenly aware as to what a important, beloved, and cherished resource the Marginal Way is to many, many people — from local residents, to people from all across the globe.
During the pandemic challenges of the past year, it moved me deeply to realize the immensely meaningful impact the Marginal Way has had (and continues to have) in the lives of multiple generations of visitors to Ogunquit. The few content pieces and photographic images I published online about the Marginal Way were among my most viewed of the year. PLUS I can’t even begin to convey how many emails and social media messages I received during 2020 asking whether the Marginal Way was open to the public.
When the world seemed darker than usual, minds from everywhere turned to Ogunquit’s Marginal Way, seemingly simultaneously; and it’s easy to see why.
This breathtakingly stunning walkway is a gift to all of the senses. It’s a destination where lasting memories are effortlessly forged. It’s a place where those in need of peace and answers can visit to find both while communing with the power and forces of nature. It’s a place where art is created. These are landscapes that helped inspire the earliest members of the Ogunquit Art Colony. Time spent on the Marginal Way by lovers, friends, and family members is very often rewarded with new depth. The Marginal Way is the beating heart of Ogunquit. A place where enduring moments for a lifetime are born. A place where anyone can take just a few steps — and leave the rest of the world a million miles behind.
Carol Leary, President of the Marginal Way Preservation Fund, recently stated it well: “Amidst all of this uncertainty and deep sadness, and sometimes the sense of helplessness, there are some moments of beauty and awe that remain within our hearts – memories of a walk along the ocean on the Marginal Way; sitting on one of the benches and enjoying the crashing waves; a proposal; a marriage ceremony; a milestone anniversary or birthday. Whatever it may be, the sense that somethings will never change brings peace to all of us…the sense that beauty prevails and the Marginal Way will always be there.“
Help ensure our Marginal Way is preserved for generations to come. Please consider giving to one of the Marginal Way Preservation Fund’s special giving levels or stretching to a new one during their 2020 appeal. Give in honor of a doctor, nurse, caregiver. Give in memory of someone close. Give to celebrate something joyous. Give because you want to help protect this magical coastal walkway that touches the lives and hearts of so many!
Please consider a tax-deductible gift to preserve our wondrous path by the sea. No gift is too small. Gift matching donations by employers are also welcome. The Marginal Way Preservation Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
