If you’ve been kicking around any of the places in southern Maine that serve interesting beer on tap – we’re pretty sure you’ve started to see some Tributary Brewing Co. offerings on their lists.
Perhaps it was a Milk Stout, a Winter Saison, a Black IPA, a Porter or a Pale Ale. Definitely it was a world class example of the style.
You see, Tributary Brewing Co. owner and master brewer, Tod Mott is something of a legend in New England beer circles.
If you’re old-school, you might remember when the IPA by Harpoon Brewery was pretty much the only available IPA at many a Northeast package store — and it was probably one of the very few widely available beers that actually opened your tastebuds to the promise of craft brewing flavors in a world dominated by Buds, Bud Lights and Zimas.
Tod Mott of Tributary Brewing Co. is the man you have to thank for the original Harpoon IPA recipe.
Or maybe you’re younger, jaded and unimpressed with the sublime easy-drinkability of Harpoon IPA in this modern world of extreme brewing, Brettanomyces, triple IPAs and hipsters sipping special releases.
Still, if you were anywhere in New England in the 2006-ish area — chances are you heard about a special little Russian Imperial Stout by Portsmouth Brewery called Kate The Great, which just happened to be noted as the ‘Best Beer In America’ during that era.
Tod Mott of Tributary Brewing Co. is also the man you have to thank for Kate The Great.
Now Mott (along with his co-owner, and wife, Galen) has complete creative control. They have successfully navigated the oftentimes turbulent waters of attempting to open their own Maine brewery. They’ve successfully completed a round of Kickstarter crowdfunding (to the tune of $65k+) which allowed them to augment their initial plans for the 4-vessel, 15 barrel brew house and tasting room at their newly renovated Post Office Square, Kittery location…and the results speak for themselves.
These aren’t toy beers, coming out of Tributary Brewing Co. These aren’t ridiculous ABV bombs or gimmicky palate wreckers. These are finely-honed brews, growlers of subtle balance, pints of experience, sips of pedigree — the artwork of a true forefather of the craft beer movement.
The brewery swag is emblazoned with the catchphrase, ‘One Tributary Leads To Another’. That’s the way it is with any beer worth drinking, and that’s what will keep Mainers, and anyone else lucky enough to sample one of Mott’s Tributary Brewing Co. beers coming back for more.
