For many across New England, making the trek to Perkins Cove in Ogunquit for the opening day of Barnacle Billy’s is a cherished rite of spring; a long-held tradition shared by coastal loving family and friends; the perfect destination from which to usher in that subtle change in the skies that inevitably leads to fondly-remembered warmer days and legendary summer nights.
After months of quietude at the Perkins Cove end of Shore Road in Ogunquit, it always comes as a surprise to turn the bend and see the Cove parking lots packed with cars, legions of lobster-lovers making the trek, and an outdoor (and harbor-front) deck packed with smiling faces sipping potent Rum Punch.
You wait your turn, place your order at the counter, vibrant energy and crustacean steam set the scene, and the hint of wood-smoke from the dining room fireplace sparks memories of opening days past.
