Ogunquit Playhouse Cancels 2020 Season Due To COVID-19

In an email and Facebook post earlier today, the Ogunquit Playhouse made an important update informing friends, community members, ticket-holders, and the general public that they would be cancelling their 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.

The update included video messaging from Ogunquit Playhouse Executive Artistic Director Bradford Kenney outlining how (and why) this major decision to cancel their 88th season was made, some of the larger financial implications of the decision, and a request for help (in the form of donations to the playhouse) from anyone who may feel moved to help out this cherished and longstanding Ogunquit landmark.

Unfortunately, after weeks of painstaking deliberation and budget re-forecasting, while keeping in mind the health and safety of our staff and all of you – and now, in light of the new state guidelines,” states Bradford Kenney, “our board of directors and senior staff leadership have come to the very painful conclusion that we must cancel our extraordinary lineup of shows slated for our stage this season, with the hopes of moving them to a future season. This will be the first time our Playhouse has had to go dark since World War II.

“There is simply no way for us to project when we could open and guarantee your safety and that of our staff and volunteers. This has to be our top priority.”

“We are also going to focus on raising funds to ensure the financial viability of the Playhouse – and begin planning for a vibrant 2021 season when we can all safely be together again.”

According to the Ogunquit Playhouse website, “If you have purchased a subscription or tickets to a performance, you will receive an email explaining all of your options.”

The Ogunquit Playhouse has also placed a FAQ Page on their website for answers to other questions about their 2020 season COVID-19 closure.

The Playhouse production team and staff members are looking for new and exciting ways to virtually share creative artistic content and programs throughout the year. Stay connected by joining them on social media.

Ogunquit Playhouse has weathered many storms for nearly a century,” states Kenney, “and together we will emerge from this crisis, and look forward to brighter days, when we gather again at the Ogunquit Playhouse.
